Human Performance Technology
(HPT) Institutes

There is a great deal of talk about aligning HR, OD, Six Sigma, Quality and Training Departments with business, and building performance-based organizations. We at the International Society for Performance Improvement believe that is a good thing. After all, we have been quietly leading the way since 1962.

ISPI is the leading international association of performance improvement professionals who are dedicated to improving individual and organizational performance through systematic, measurable and reproducible means. Ten thousand ISPI members in some 40 countries utilize a results-performance improvement process that includes performance analysis, cause analysis, intervention selection and design, intervention implementation, and evaluation. The intervention may involve training; it may not. Either way, each successful application results in positive changes to the competence, abilities and performance of the workforce. This process, which ISPI refers to as Human Performance Technology, is taught in the ISPI Performance Improvement Institutes.

Principles and Practices of Performance Improvement

A Three-Day Performance Improvement Institute
Developed by ISPI

Sunday, April 10 to Tuesday, April 12
8:30 am - 5:00 pm
Mackenzie I, Fairmont Hotel

Registration Code: WSP

Faculty: Timm Esque, CPT, Carol Haig, CPT, and Miki Lane, CPT

Principles and Practices of Performance Improvement is the premier learning event for those ready to acquire the performance consulting mindset so critical in today's business climate. Guided by expert instructors/facilitators, participants are immediately engaged in a learning experience that models the very techniques it presents. Workplace examples and collaborative analyses of case studies pull participants into active problem solving, as they learn the foundations of performance improvement. The program demonstrates proven tools and techniques in use in the performance improvement arena today. Participants will apply the skills of performance consulting and the techniques introduced in this workshop to diagnose performance improvement opportunities and prescribe strategies and tactics to address them. Takeaways include models, best practices, resources and a network of colleagues with a broad array of expertise.

Performance Objective

Principles and Practices of Performance Improvement will teach you the Human Performance Technology process and the application of performance consulting skills and tools to analyze a workplace performance problem, present solutions and evaluate your results.

You Will Learn To:

  • Define Human Performance Technology.
  • Define performance and describe how to apply the HPT model to improve performance.
  • Apply the Total Performance System to identify performance issues.
  • Conduct a Gap Analysis to compare desired performance to actual performance in order to identify performance gaps.
  • Identify possible causes of performance gaps.
  • Prescribe appropriate interventions that could eliminate performance gaps.
  • Identify levels of performance evaluation and the types of data that each level yields.

"It's the best [workshop] I've been to in my civilian career. As far as I am concerned, this is the workshop to attend for anyone trying to get their arms around what performance consulting is all about."

"The workshop was long on practical application and short on theory. The knowledge, experience, and real-world examples [the faculty] provided greatly enhanced the learning experience."

"Bravo Zulu!"

Making the Transition to Performance Improvement

Award-Winning, Three-day Performance Improvement Institute
Developed by ISPI

Sunday, April 10 to Tuesday, April 12
8:30 am - 5:00 pm
Mackenzie II, Fairmont Hotel

Registration Code: WST

Faculty: Roger Addison, CPT, Lynn Kearny, CPT, Geary Rummler, CPT, and Klaus Wittkuhn, CPT

Many HR, OD, Training, ISD and performance improvement professionals acknowledge that training is seldom the sole solution to a business problem. In recent years HR and OD managers and trainers have learned the value of expanding their traditional focus to applying a broader strategy that uses Human Performance Technology - a process of selection, analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs to most cost-effectively influence human behavior and accomplishment - to improve workplace performance.

But what does a performance improvement department look like in action? How can a traditional HR, OD or Training department make the transition to a performance improvement function? What skills are needed? What are the risks and the benefits of making this transition? The Institute will address and answer these questions in three days of hands-on, interactive learning. The knowledge gained is immediately applicable in the workplace and is designed to produce the highest return on investment for participating organizations.

You Will Learn To:

  • Develop a strategic plan to move your HR, OD or Training department toward a human performance improvement organization.
  • Identify and learn to apply the knowledge, skills, and resources you will need to implement your strategic plan.
  • Learn the fundamentals of human performance improvement: the models, the methods, and the benefits.
  • Learn how to diagnose workplace problems and apply a variety of training and non-training solutions that improve performance and provide an increased return on investment.
  • Improve your organization's effectiveness and bottom line.
  • Improve your own performance.

Making the Transition to Performance Improvement is a three-day, hands-on learning event guided by master performance improvement experts and case study presenters.

The Institute provides a forum for participants to problem-solve with a faculty of human performance technology experts and other professional colleagues.

Instructional strategies include lecture, case studies, small group discussions and skill practice.

The program uses best practices from human performance technology to assist you in making the transition to performance improvement.

Takeaways include models, best practices, networking and partnership skills, techniques for marketing performance improvement, and a value proposition.

Program Topics Include:
