2003 Guidelines & Criteria for Honorary Award Nominations  

ISPI has three special honorary awards that recognize outstanding individuals and organizations for their significant contributions to human performance technology and to the Society itself. The awards are the Thomas F. Gilbert Distinguished Professional Achievement Award, the Distinguished Service Award, and the Honorary Life Member Award. Below are the guidelines used for selecting individuals to receive these awards. As done in the past, the membership is asked to submit names of qualified individuals for consideration for the Thomas F. Gilbert Distinguished Professional Achievement Award and the Distinguished Service Award. If you are interested in nominating an ISPI member, please email the following information to april@ispi.org:
  • Name of Award
  • Name, Telephone Number, and Email of Nominee
  • Name and Telephone Number of Nominator
  • Brief Supporting Information for the Nominee

The 2002 recipients of these awards were Dr. Richard E. Clark, Thomas F. Gilbert Distinguished Professional Achievement Award; Timm J. Esque, Distinguished Service Award; and Wellesley R. "Rob" Foshay, PhD, Honorary Life Member Award. The deadline to receive nominations is November 15, 2002. 


Thomas F. Gilbert Distinguished Professional Achievement Award

Purpose: To recognize outstanding and significant contributions to the knowledge base of human performance technology.

Qualifying Criteria (for candidate to be considered)

  • 10+ consecutive years as a contributor to the field of human performance technology
  • Recognized by professional organizations related to HPT such as ISPI, ASTD, etc.
  • Regular presenter at conferences such as ISPI or other related HPT organizations
  • Has not served on the Board for at least three years prior to the date of presentation of award

Distinguishing Criteria (for selection of candidates under consideration)

  • Has made significant contributions to the knowledge base of human performance technology
  • Has made contributions to the definition/communication/demonstration of HPT
  • Has mentored other HPT practitioners
  • Has the respect of his/her peers in the technology
  • Has published in journals/books/media to communicate achievements/findings in HPT
  • Has promoted HPT through presentation to other professional groups

Distinguished Service Award

Purpose: To recognize outstanding and significant contributions to the betterment of ISPI on a long-term basis

Qualifying Criteria (for candidate to be considered)

  • 10+ consecutive years as an international member of ISPI
  • Served on a range of international ISPI Committees and/or special assignments
  • Regular presenter at the international conference, regional, and local chapter events
  • Has not served on the Board for at least three years prior to the date of presentation of award

Distinguishing Criteria (for selection of candidates under consideration)

  • Has made contributions to the definition/communication/demonstration of the Society
  • Has recruited and mentored ISPI members
  • Has the respect of his/her peers in the Society
  • Has promoted ISPI through presentation to other professional groups
  • Contribution to the international conference is noteworthy
  • Has made significant contributions to the formation/development of chapters and the international organization

Honorary Life Member Award

Purpose: To recognize outstanding and significant contributions to the field of human performance technology and the Society

Qualifying Criteria (for candidate to be considered)

  • 10+ consecutive years as an international member of ISPI
  • Served on a range of international ISPI Committees and/or special assignments
  • Regular presenter at the international conference, regional, and local chapter events
  • Has not served on the Board for at least three years prior to the date of presentation of award

Distinguishing Criteria (for selection of candidates under consideration)

  • Has made contributions to the definition/communication/demonstration of HPT
  • Has mentored ISPI members
  • Has the respect of his/her peers in the technology
  • Has published in ISPI and other journals/books/media to communicate achievements/findings in HPT
  • Has promoted ISPI through presentation to other professional groups
  • Contribution to the international conference is noteworthy
  • Has made significant contributions to the knowledge base of human performance technology
