What CPT Means to Me To my surprise, more and more people are beginning to recognize the importance of the CPT designation after my name. Those who don't will usually ask, which gives me an opportunity to explain, briefly, the importance of being a CPT in the field of Human Performance Technology (HPT) and also what HPT is all about. Becoming a Certified Performance Technologist and being recognized by my peers was definitely one of my "bucket list" accomplishments and something that I am very proud of! James R. Parry, CPT Test Development Manager, US Coast Guard Training Center, Yorktown, VA Chief Executive Manager, Compass Consultants, LLC
"The CPT designation is meaningful both to my clients and to fellow performance technologists. To clients it means that I have demonstrated adherence to a rigorous set of standards. To fellow practitioners, it means a shared language and a community of practice. I also think it is a realization by the profession that it is time to get very serious about standards and service. Hopefully, it will lead to a better definition and agreement about the parameters of human performance technology itself."
George W. Byars, CPT Saudi Aramco
"Getting the CPT designation means three things to me (and counting):
going through the attestation process with my boss focused his awareness on what it means to do high quality work; getting the certificate makes me feel tremendously proud; and using the standards job aid helps me focus my daily activities and communicate more clearly the value of following the systematic process."
E. Lisette Gerald-Yamasaki, CPT, Instructional Designer, AppleCare Service Training

"The first time I showed the CPT designation to a client, he said “...what the heck (edited version) is that?” After I explained what it meant, he was intrigued, saying “it’s about time you got some standards and rigor into your profession” Then I told him that there always were standards and rigor, but now you will know if the HPTer in front of you practices the standards with rigor. Now he was very intrigued."

- "It's about time." - "Thanks to ISPI for finally doing what has been needed in this field for many years now." - "Which part of 'get certified now' do you not understand?" - "Get certified or I'll make you an offer you cannot refuse." - "Join the few, the chosen" -- oops, already taken by a rival services, sorry. - "Watch the charlatans and one-week-workshop-wonders quiver as the real CPT's arrive." Ken Steinman, CPT The Regence Group
When I entered this business over 25 years ago there were few opportunities to gain university degrees in our profession and our specific field of practice. Over the years the practice and educational opportunities have expanded dramatically. For me, the CPT designation recognizes my personal development in the practice and the real world application of HPT processes in many successful projects. When CPT follows your name, it means you have been accredited by the best people in this field for doing quality work and I am very proud of this designation.

Being a CPT provides me with an overall framework for developing this strategy document, along with experience in providing concrete examples of how the HPT standards shape our approach to projects.
