Human Performance Technology
(HPT) Institutes

There is a great deal of talk about aligning Human Resources, Quality, and Training Departments with business, and building performance-based organizations. We at the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) believe that is a good thing. After all, we have been quietly leading the way since 1962.

ISPI is an international association of professionals who are dedicated to improving individual and organizational performance through systematic, measurable, and reproducible means. Ten thousand ISPI and chapter members in some 40 countries utilize a performance improvement process that includes performance analysis, cause analysis, intervention selection and design, implementation, and evaluation. The intervention may involve training; it may not. Either way, each successful application results in positive changes to the competence, abilities, and performance of the workforce. This process, which ISPI refers to as Human Performance Technology (HPT), is taught during an ISPI Performance Improvement Institute.

HPT is governed by a set of underlying principles and the Standards of Performance Technology, which serve to differentiate it from other disciplines and to guide practitioners in its use. An Institute provides attendees with a unique opportunity to learn and practice the 10 Standards of Performance Technology, which include:
  1. Focus on Results
  2. Take a Systems View
  3. Add Value
  4. Utilize Partnerships
  5. Systematic Assessment of Need or Opportunity
  6. Systematic Cause-Performance Analysis
  7. Systematic Design
  8. Systematic Development
  9. Systematic Implementation
  10. Systematic Evaluation

An ISPI HPT Institute is a hands-on, interactive learning event. The knowledge gained is immediately applicable in the workplace and is designed to produce the highest return on investment for participating organizations.

Principles and Practices of Performance Improvement
Monday, September 24 to Wednesday, September 26, 2007
8:30 am - 5:00 pm

In 2005, the Institute faculty debuted a new version of our highly acclaimed Principles and Practices of Performance Improvement Institute which was expanded it to include the latest thinking from the HPT Think Tank:

  • Overview of HPT to Match the Certification Standards
  • Performance Analysis to Worker, Work, and Workplace
  • HPT and the Balance Score Card
  • Systematic Approach to Performance Consulting

In addition, the focus still includes the basic principles of the Standards of Performance Technology:

  • Focus on Results
  • System Thinking
  • Add Value
  • Work with Partners
  • Use a Systematic Approach

Principles and Practices of Performance Improvement is the premier learning event for those ready to acquire the performance consulting mindset so critical in today's business climate. Guided by expert instructors/facilitators, participants are immediately engaged in a learning experience that models the very techniques it presents. Workplace examples and collaborative analyses of case studies pull participants into active problem solving, as they learn the foundations of performance improvement. The program demonstrates proven tools and techniques in use in the performance improvement arena today. Participants will apply the skills of performance consulting and the techniques introduced in this workshop to diagnose performance improvement opportunities and prescribe strategies and tactics to address them. Takeaways include models, best practices, resources and a network of colleagues with a broad array of expertise.
