Background
We believe that measurement of results and use of measures as part of the self-correcting process of HPT is essential to the field/discipline, and that without it we are essentially hypocritical. In addition, we believe that by making performance results measurement a visible part of everything we do, ISPI/HPT will be able to differentiate itself from the increasing number of authors, organizations, and others claiming to improve performance.
Destination and possible milestones
Increase the visible use of performance/results measurement in:
- manuscripts submitted and manuscripts published (set percentage goals)
- conference presentations (set percentage goals)
- HPT practice and artifacts of that practice
- management of ISPI and public display of ongoing measurement
Potential Hazards
- Assessment police: the danger of establishing an aversive, judgmental approach/group
- Analysis paralysis: being consumed by the process and never getting to results
- Silly measurements: measuring for its own sake to meet imposed criteria, not measuring the right things
- Assessment backlash: resistance, excuses, etc. in response to disliked data, an ineffective mandate, etc.
Vehicles
- Descriptions of best practices of performance measurement/case studies
- Providing skills and specific results/measurement templates for industries and types of functions that give practitioners a place to start with a practical but effective approach
- Reward and acknowledge performance measurement and results (awards for cost-effectiveness, for effective measurement practices, iconsnoting data-based presentations in conference program, etc.)
- Include criteria for including performance measurement in conference proposals/presentations
- Editorial criteria for ISPI publications
- ISPI visibly using performance measurement to run the organizationResources
- Support from ISPI sponsors and Advocates
- Organizational support
- Senior people, experts to lead/teach/demonstrate measurement tools/practices/applications
Drivers
- ISPI Board
- Journal editors (ISPI and other organizations)
- Conference organizers (ISPI and other organizations)
- Advocates/corporations (including corporations that are not ISPI Advocates)
- Experts (ISPI and other organizationsPossible Tasks
- Establish baseline measures for data/results in publications and conferences: convene publication and conference teams to set goals, e.g., # results/data-based publications, sessions, etc. (Note: use existing teams and boards with input from this Think Tank group)
- Identify measurement experts/teachers: recruit measurement experts to lead, teach, and demonstrate. Form a team of measurement experts that will create a charter to lead, teach, demonstrate.
- Performance Measurement Think Tank group will provide input to:
- Awards Committee (criteria for data, results, etc.)
- Conference tracks (criteria for data/results; highlighting data-based presentations, etc.)
- Positioning Think Tank work group, to include performance measurement as part of who we are
